Gouramis Fish

Gouramis fish are one of my favorite fish. I have been in the tropical fish hobby for over forty-five years now and out of all the fish I have mated the Gourami is by far the easiest. Here I will tell you exactly how to do it, I have mated them every which way possible. I have mated them in a five gallon tank and in a ten gallon tank the only difference is when the babies grow up you need the ten gallon. The first couple of times I ended up with a small number of fry. I think the main reason was the food was to big. I figured it out though, that you can take the dried powder baby food and mix it good in a cup of warm water and once it dissolves and you pour it into the tank. The almost liquid particles will now float slowly to the bottom instead of floating on top of the water. The fry can now easily eat and grow faster you only have to do this for about eight days then they can get it at the top of the water. After about three weeks they will be able to eat flake food and freeze dried foods.

I have a large female Blue Gourami, a large Gold Gourami, and large male Blue Gourami. Seen a Question somewhere one day, went like this, will a Blue Gourami mate with a Gold Gourami the answer is yes and evidently any other female Gourami you put in the tank with him. To do this test I put the female blue Gourami and the Gold female Gorami in a Ten gallon tank with the male Blue Gourami. Well the most unusual thing happen. He mated with both at the same time. Had about one thousand fry hatch and about two hundred survived, some of the fry were true blue and some were a lighter color with a touch of gold trying to bleed through, but all had the three spots where the Gold Gourami female you can't depict the spots except for the eye.

Another thing about the Gouramis fish, especially the Blue or Three Spot Gourami, the pair I have mated and had fry five times in a four month period and averaging five hundred eggs or more each time that's a over seven thousand potential fry per year. Now that's prolific,

and if you could raise fifty-percent to saleable size that's thirty-five hundred fish and if you could get fifty cents each somehow, if my calculations are right, comes to seventeen hundred and fifty dollars a year.

Now the part you didn't know is the fish stores and pet shops sell the Blue Gourami for more than three dollars each, last one I saw in the shop I go to was three dollars and fifty six cents. You could always sell them on line or open your own fish store. Think of the profit just from a mated pair of Gouramis fish. Now what if you mated Fifty different species of Tropical Fish, what would be your profits, Its fun to let your imagination go wild and wonder can it really be done. I just sold a dozen, for ten dollars just last week and plan on selling more in the not to diatant future. If I only had a Tropical Fish Store.
